ABOUT MY PROJECT
TOPIC & SUBJECT AREA

I focused my final project on bullying awareness for teenagers - which is part of this year's school syllabus.  The project provided an opportunity for students to understand and identify the four main types of bullying; physical, verbal, social and cyber. While it is a relevant topic for all students, exploring it within the framework of English, allowed students to develop their key language skills including speaking, listening, expressing an opinion and writing.

CONTEXT

Bullying is an insidious issue, which if not responded to effectively, can lead to devastating consequences. I believe that students must be made fully aware of bullying and the impact it can have, so that we can prevent it from happening in the future. Although there have been many anti-bullying campaigns in the past, this remains to be an essential issue across our schools and the broader society in general. This concern is especially true for cyber bullying, which, due to the popularity of social media has become more prevalent among school children and adults alike. Unlike other forms of bullying, cyber bullies can remain anonymous and difficult to track.  Victims can be attacked anywhere and at any time.

My objectives were to respond to the key aspects of PBL: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication, in the context of bullying awareness.  From an ESL perspective, my aim was for students to develop essential English language and communication skills in an authentic way.

My 'Say Bye to Bullying' lesson plan is suitable for secondary children and can be adapted to suit different needs and abilities. It is suitable for students who enjoy contributing to whole-class discussions, as well as those who prefer pair work. In addition to the core lesson, students had the opportunity reflect more deeply with homework that complemented our class work. The homework exercise was particularly useful for students who shy away from verbal communication, but can express themselves more effectively while writing. Due to the various forms and considerations related to bullying, students could contribute at a level that suited their abilities.
