My Reflections

If you had told me a year ago that I would be teaching English in a secondary school, I would not have believed you. My career to date was in the commercial sector of marketing, not education. But on reflection, I recognise how organic and authentic this transition has been.

Firstly, it's important to note that as a child, I enjoyed school. I enjoyed the variety of subjects, different teaching methods and being among my friends in a structured environment - an environment that facilitated creativity, inspiration and self-development.  As I began to further my education, I took an interest in the world of media and communication, in particular, journalism which became my degree of choice. I was particularly drawn to the process of gathering information and communicating this to an audience; in essence, understanding and sharing. In addition to this, I grew a considerable interest in radio broadcasting which I studied along with my degree. Again the premise of this field was to inform and engage an audience with information, communication and content.

My journalism degree led me to the marketing sector. Although I became a competent professional in this field of work, it was not fulfilling. Outside of work I continued my joy of learning and building my level of knowledge in a variety of areas. I became more active in writing and communication, starting my own blog and presenting a show on community radio. Suffice to say that on reflection, I would conclude that my interest in education had been masked under the umbrella of media and journalism.

It wasn't until 2019, that my natural skills and interests became aligned with a new career opportunity in teaching.

I wasn't sure what to expect as an Auxiliar de Conversación and compared to most of the other assistants who are generally in their early to mid-twenties, I had decided to embark on this programme at an older age - 34 years old.

Although it is 'early days,' I can confidently attest to feeling passionate about my work and the contributions that I am making to students lives.

My highlights to date include witnessing first hand how students are building their confidence and increasing their level of understanding. I also enjoy seeing how well students respond to my lesson plans which are generally a combination of presentation, interaction and activities.

Working as an Auxiliar has given me a true sense of purpose, not only has this been an opportunity to educate, but it has informed me of my true vocation. I truly feel in my element teaching at IES Emperatriz Maria de Austria. I have established myself as an educator who is enthusiastic about my role. If you were to tell me now that teaching was always meant for me - I would confidently agree.
