My  School

IES EMPERATRIZ MARIA DE AUSTRIA

IES Emperatriz Maria de Austria is a secondary school based in the south of Madrid close to Elliptical Square.

It has been a mixed school for just over 50 years and before this, was an all-girls school.

There are around 600 students at my school, and I teach across several classes:

Classes across 1st ESO & 1st ESO Oral

One class from 2nd ESO

One class from 3rd ESO

Classes across 2nd Bach & 2nd Bach Oral

IES Emperatriz Maria de Austria is a diverse school with students hailing from across the world, most notably Latin America. I was placed there along with another Auxiliar de Conversación and together we have been able to integrate well within the school and our respective classes. Before starting, we had an excellent induction where we had the opportunity to meet other members of staff and some of the students. Although I was nervous and apprehensive at the start, it wasn't long before I felt like an integrated member of the team.

In general, my students are keen and enthusiastic about learning English and I have been very impressed by their level and willingness to participate.  In addition to exploring new ideas, many students see the benefits of being bilingual and the opportunities that can arise in our ever-increasing global world.

Students here are benefiting from the school's commitment to providing an immersive teaching experience. In relation to this, there are various annual field trips, that are co-ordinated by the English department, to places such as Cambridge and Edinburgh.

I am fortunate to be working alongside an English department with supportive and committed teachers. Collaboration is essential (both with the teachers and my fellow Auxiliar). I have also enjoyed the autonomy (practising as a lead teacher) and trust that has been given to me at my school.
